To reduce the chance of injury to yourself or a pet during a coyote encounter, do any of the following:
1. Stand your ground, present a bold front (don't act scared) and DO NOT RUN.
2. Make loud noises, shout, clap your hands
3. Blow a whistle
4. Bang 2 pots together
5. Wave your arms and yell loudly
6. Carry a walking stick
7. Spray it with the garden hose
Dr. Mitchell adds: Scoop small pets up into your arms and keep ALL pets on a short tight leash if you see a coyote. NEVER allow a pet to lunge at a coyote or provoke it.
