A Note From Our Doctors About Pet Food

As most of you know, pet foods continue to be recalled with apalling regularity.  And it's certainly not just some of the prescription veterinary diets, such as many foods made by Hills and Iams, that have been implicated.  It's even more of the pet foods, snacks  and treats that you purchase at grocery stores and pet stores!  You can't assume that if a pet food label says "natural" or "organic" that the food is less likely to be involved in a recall, either.  There is scarcely a line, brand, or type of pet food or snack that has not been implicated.  We are maintaining the most current possible information for you here on our website.

At this time, we are recommending that you check our website regularly for recall updates, before you feed ANY canned, dry, or pouch pet food, and before you feed ANY treat, jerky, or dental care snack.

You cannot count upon retail stores to remove recalled foods from their shelves, as many stores are electing to continue to sell recalled products and to leave the choice to buy them up to the consumer.

If you see any household pets exhibiting signs of health issues, please contact us at once to schedule an examination with the first available Doctor.

Specific signs for which to watch include:

  • Lack of appetite or more finicky appetite
  • Sleeping or being quiet more than usual
  • Hiding under beds or couches rather than interacting with the family
  • Increase or decrease in water intake
  • Increase or decrease in food intake
  • Increase or decrease in urine frequency; accidents in house
  • Neurologic changes such as difficulty walking, or circling, falling, or seizures
  • Changes in BM or urine.

Even if you believe that you are feeding a safe food to your pets, please make it a practice to check our website at least twice a week for new recalls, to safeguard the health of your pets.  Many foods that veterinarians never expected to be on the recall list have been added – it’s not just cheap or generic foods!

Our Doctors and our Webmistress are monitoring and making public all recall information as it becomes available, and our Doctors are in daily close contact with other members of the worldwide veterinary community via the Internet.  We will continue to do our best to keep you updated as pet foods continue to be periodically recalled.
