October 2005 - What Does Lizzie Say?

Lizzie recently read an article by Anthony Carr, D.V.M. in Veterinary Practice News, regarding pig ear consumption by dogs and cats. She knows a lot of her friends enjoy gnawing on a pig ear now and then. But, studies show that feeding pig ears can increase an animal's resistance to antibiotics, and they are also associated with salmonella risks.

Lizzie says: Talk to your veterinarian about your pet's dietary needs before feeding pig ears (your pig friends will thank you, too!). So what is a better treat choice? I myself favor raw bones, an occasional Greenie, bananas, fresh chicken hearts and gizzards, broccoli, and I am currently conducting a detailed taste test on Sam's Yams, a dehydrated sweet potato treat available here at the hospital. Ask your vet whether any of these might be good treats for you.
