December 2005 - What Does Lizzie Say?

Lizzie sorted through some information that came to the hospital, about litter box additives designed to make cats want to use their litter boxes more consistently. Some of these products claim to "draw" a cat to the litter box rather than using your rug or a potted plant as a handy toilet. None of them focused very much on making sure that a cat's litter box was always clean.

Lizzie says: It's time to talk dirty! If you aren't cleaning your cat's litter box at least once a day, I want you to try this -- every time you decide to NOT clean your kitty's litter box, you don't get to flush your toilet the next time you use it. How long would you last if you had to keep using a stinky toilet that you couldn't flush? One day? Two days? A week? Well, darlin', you have a choice about flushing. Your cat doesn't. So be a good pet owner and clean your sweet kitty's box daily. And for pete's sake, dump ALL the litter once a week and give the box a good scalding out before refilling it with fresh litter. My two kitties, Xena and Emmett, appreciate a pristine litter box as much as our clients at the hospital appreciate how clean we keep our restroom!
