The American Veterinary
Medical Association has followed the lead of many European
veterinary groups in recommending this surgery for your pet while
it is still quite young. Drs. Alicia Faggella and Michael
Aronsohn, of Angell Memorial Animal Hospital (Massachusetts SPCA),
have documented that kittens can be safely neutered or spayed at
2-3 months of age. Other data in dogs has shown that pups
neutered or spayed at 7 weeks of age were just as healthy as pups
neutered at the age of 7 months.
There are many advantages for early
surgery. Your pet recovers from surgery faster and heals
faster. There is no risk of your pet going into heat, thus
delaying the surgery (and risking a pregnancy!). The risk of
breast cancer in female pets is greatly reduced. And, surgery
on a smaller pet is less costly for you!
